Rosy pink sky this morning after a clear moonlit night. Yesterday sunny and mild – a perfect autumn day for a breakfast of pancakes and apple pie.
It is peak foliage and apple season in Vermont and Dummerston center is the site of the annual pie festival. The church bakes 1500 apple pies – each with a signature crust – and sells them whole or by the slice with Vermont cheddar cheese. Volunteer fire fighters cook countless stacks of pancakes and serve them with locally produced maple syrup and apple sauce. Popular with visitors and hundreds of bikers – it is also a place for local families and friends to gather to greet the day, and to celebrate the harvest season. A neighborhood tag sale, a craft fair, and an exhibit at the historical society adds to the fun. All in support of several good causes. My take-away catch of the day – four apple pies, two pumpkins, one dozen cinnamon sugar donuts, several hand-knitted hats and a pair of cozy mittens. Fortified for the day – and for the cooler weather ahead.
this is going on the calendar…
