Pure white outside. Like being in the middle of a magical tableau in a snow globe. I love this whiteness, so light and bright in the otherwise gloomy dark of the winter. White is the perfect color – bright and light in the winter and cool in the summer. And though black is my other white, and the color of light blond natural wood always makes me feel at home wherever I am, in the kitchen, it is blue that perfectly accents the white. I am fortunate to have inherited treasures from both my Norwegian father and my Danish mother, and I am blessed with gifts of blue and white from the travels of friends and family. And truth be told, I have also been known to succumb to the lure of the new and shiny from Bing & Grøndahl, Royal Copenhagen, Arabia, Rorstrand or Porsgrund, along with blue and whites of unknown, generic origins. Of course, budget and space limitations often dictate that a photo or a memory has to suffice for my collection. Which can be even better than the real thing – and surprisingly satisfying. Real or imagined, they evoke sweet memories of travels, friends and family.
I like the white of the photos because it’s offset by blue. When white isn’t accompanied by another color, it can seem too surgical.
