Vermont is covered with powdery, fluffy snow and sunshine this January – perfect for getting out of the house and exploring the out-of-doors on skis. Nearby woodlands, ponds and fields offer free skiing. Groomed trails require paying a fee, but offer reliable conditions, and usually a cozy warming hut – and hot chocolate – especially welcome on extra chilly days. Only 2 miles from the center of Brattleboro there are 25 km of groomed cross-country ski trails maintained by the Brattleboro Outing Club. Trails are open to BOC winter pass holders. Daily guest passes can be purchased in the warming hut (open on weekends and holidays) or paid at the Honor Box sign-in. A BOC season’s pass includes a free day pass to many other x-c ski areas through the Ski Vermont Reciprocal Program – a wonderful opportunity to explore Vermont’s countryside and enjoy free skiing at many small and large nordic ski areas throughout the state. Call ahead to confirm eligibility, but most areas listed here take part in the reciprocal program. Stay warm and have fun!
